Faith Formation Minister - Job Description

 

Supervision: Pastors

 

Purpose: Our Faith Formation Minister equips the whole congregation for the work of forming faith within ourselves and our community with special focus on how our community can shape the faith of the young people in our lives. This role connects the whole body of Christ together by fostering deeper connections among staff, volunteers, families, youth, and children, and encouraging intergenerational leadership in our ministry. They support staff and families by providing faith formation resources and creating opportunities in the community for meaningful spiritual growth.

 

Job Requirements:

       Pass a background check.

       Take a sexual abuse awareness class through Ministry Safe.

       Relevant ministry experience in youth and family ministry.

       Demonstrated ability to work with children, youth, and families.

       Strong organizational and communication skills.

       Ability to support and supervise staff and volunteers with clarity and care.

       Comfort in using basic email, digital file sharing, and general office software skills.

       Commitment to the mission and values of St. Mark’s.

 

Preferred:

       A bachelor’s degree in youth and children's ministry, or an equivalent.

       Familiarity with Lutheran traditions and teachings or willingness to learn, including the liturgical year, Luther’s Small Catechism, Lutheran hymnody and worship traditions, and the ELCA’s National Youth Gathering.

       Familiarity with Godly Play philosophy and practice.

 

Job Description:

       Spiritual Formation

       ○        Help individuals and families grow in their spiritual lives through conversation and meaningful practices and activities.

       ○        Participate regularly in the worship life of St. Mark’s.

       ○        Encourage and support children, youth, and families in active worship leadership roles.

       ○        Assist with or lead children’s messages and milestone recognitions (Confirmation, giving of Bibles) in worship.


       Community Building

       ○        Build and sustain a welcoming, inclusive sense of community among children, youth, parents, and the whole community at St. Mark’s.

       ○        Foster environments where faith questions, doubts, and different experiences can be shared openly and respectfully.

       ○        Create opportunities for parents, children, and youth to connect with peers and form lasting relationships.

       ○        Strengthen fellowship across households through shared activities, learning, and service.


       Communication

       ○        Communicate clearly and effectively with children, youth, parents, staff, and volunteers.

       ○        Collaborate closely with pastors, staff, and volunteers including regular attendance at staff meetings and the semi-annual staff planning retreat.

       ○        Represent faith formation ministries positively within the congregation and broader community.

       ○        Establish trust with parents and youth by being visible, approachable, and consistent.

       ○        Collaborate closely with Communications Coordinator to develop a communications strategy for children, youth, and families, including
              outreach via social media.


       Program Development & Leadership

       ○        Support and supervise St. Mark’s children, youth, and family staff and stakeholder volunteers: Youth Program Leaders, Godly Play Director,
              Alleluia Choir Director, Vacation Bible School chair.

              ■       primarily coordination and mentoring

              ■       hiring and evaluation overseen by Congregation Council

       ○        With stakeholders, plan, organize, and lead faith formation programs and events (e.g., youth programing, retreats. National Youth Gathering,
              mission trips)

       ○        Coordinate logistics, volunteers, and resources for key children, youth, and family ministry events.

       ○        Evaluate programs regularly and adapt based on participation and feedback.

       ○        Support families in learning how to talk about faith naturally and confidently in everyday life.

 

       Creativity & Innovation

       ○        Develop new approaches to engaging families in faith conversation and shared experiences.

       ○        Build relationships with families through visits in homes, coffee shops, schools, and community settings (e.g., sports events, recitals,
              graduations).

       ○        Help the congregation see faith formation as a shared calling for the whole community, not (just) a program for children and youth.

       ○        Create intergenerational opportunities for learning, worship, service, and fellowship, partnering with staff and volunteers to integrate faith
              formation across congregational life.

 

 

Time requirements: full-time with seasonal variance; other timing structures will be considered on an individual candidate basis.
